Doodle doodle~

18 04 2007

Hey hey, I’m back! Don’t worry, am not dead yet. Haha!

Here’s something I just drew for a friend’s birthday card… don’t know what is it. Some kiddo warrior of some sort.

Just kinda missed toying around with my colour pencils…

Materials: A4 paper, drawing pens, colour pencils

Comments? :)

Printed copy

Other Info

Everything done on Macromedia Freehand, except for the coarse brown rusty texture on the outer part of the mailer – that was created using photoshop.

Don’t know the grade for this, but my lecturer did mention that the whole class generally did a horrible job. Woops… hahaha.

Please note that the achievements and artworks included on the inside of the mailer are all made up. Not mine!

For more info, please read this entry. :)

Digital manicure & fake hair

10 04 2007

In a Nutshell

Did this recently for a friend whose cousin is opening a salon cum manicure shop. She needed an image to be on the pamphlet, which shows what kinda service they provide. This picture is still undergoing some minor changes now, but I like it at this stage. :)

Other Info

All nail art and background graphics pathed out using Macromedia Freehand, superimposed onto fingernails with Photoshop CS2.

Fake hair done with purely on Photoshop.

Hand is my own, and also photographed it myself using Fuji Finepix F20.

Transformations

10 04 2007

In a Nutshell

Using this given shape, make transformations of it such as internal & external variation, superimposition, extension, transfiguration and laying in texture.

My finals are still with my lecturer & I don’t think I will ever get them back…

I’ve only got a few sketches (of which finishing are not so good), so here we go!

.

Materials: Layout paper, drawing pens, copic markers
Presentation: Black & white; 10cm x 10cm

One of the more tedious one is the one which we had to lay in texture. We had to find lots of different kind of textures from magazine, photocopy, cut and paste them onto the shape.

Here’s the one I made. Named it the Beast of Burden. Hohoho!

I hope I can get the rest back. I like some of the others I did but don’t have a copy of them. :(

Well, that’s all!

Critiques are welcome again! :D

Other Info

We had to finish this assignment during class in about 90 minutes, inclusive of sketching, tracing, conceptualising and producing neat work. *sweats*

Not very easy especially when your hands start shaking at the very last 30 seconds.

That’s why the last 2 is quite… hmm… not very well done. =X

Type As Visual Image

9 04 2007

In a Nutshell

Choose a special movie screening of your favourite and create a A3 size poster (using serif or san-serif type) to promote it. Remember to include date, time and venue, as well as prices of tickets. You are also required to add in your organizer or sponsor logo.

Only minimal images can be used. Type, texture, and lines should be the main elements.

Heroes, Sheroes, Thingos

9 04 2007

In a Nutshell

1) To work towards an image resource under one of the above headings.

2) To edit, modify and collate a selection of images in a series of 3 postcards.

3) To analyse the mechanics of communication

4) To encode a chosen identity using visualisation of different aspects of the identity.

5) To achieve a successful decoding of the visual communication created without stating the obvious or underestimating the audience.

6) To work in a traditional format without using any software or computer to assist in your work.

My Choices

Hero: Guan Yu (better known as Guan Gong)
Shero:
Hua Mu Lan
Thingo: Sword

Presentation: 15 cm x 10.5 cm
Medium: Watercolour

We could not use any text, purely images to convey what we wanna show in our hero shero and thingo.

Guan Yu: He is a man of justice, upholds brotherhood and is on of the best warriors ever existed. He won countless battles but eventually his ego got the better of him. Lost a crucial battle and died consequently. He is worshipped as a diety now in temples.

Postcard shows him as a man of confidence and determination, thus that menacing look on his face. The Guan Dao is his signature weapon which was with him through many victories, so it has gotta be in there too.

Hua Mu Lan: Mulan disguised herself as a man to take her elderly father’s place in the army. She dressed as a man and disguised herself as a soldier.

Postcard portrays her as a courageous and filial young lady, all set and ready for battle, and most importantly, she is doing all these for the love of her father.

Sword: Basically a sword is a lethal weapon. I can be seen as a powerful and useful weapon, or just an evil vice.

Postcard shows both sides of a sword. Sharp, powerful, lethal are its good qualities. But if it is not handled for the right purposes, it may become evil and have a life of its own – like that eye staring at you… it wants you to fear it.

Haha ok. Quite drama, but hmm… was quite fun painting those postcards.

***

Other Info

Please do note that images are not purely created by myself. Picture references are taken from Xbox game Romance of 3 Kingdoms (Guan Yu), Disney Mulan Posters (Hua Mu Lan), and the sword was a picture from the Internet, but I modified it a little to suit my concept.

Sorry for no close-ups, I can’t seem to take them clearly with the right amounts of light. Will try again if I’ve got the time, but the small one above should suffice. Haha!

That’s all folks!

Free Form & Structure

7 04 2007

In a Nutshell

This assignment attempts to familiarise students with forms and spaces created by their juxtaposition. By taking each shape apart and manipulating its fragments, students will experiment and experience the tension between freedom and constraint.

The process begins with the investigation of the unique qualities of a shape through cropping. Next we combine an even number of reduction, organised to form a larger composition. At this point, attention shifts from the relationship between form and its surrounding space to the equal amounts of black and white, each giving way to the other. By weaving together free forms, the student is developing skills that will help in solving design problems, where form doesn’t follow function.

Chosen “Shape

Part 1: Cropping

Materials: Layout paper, drawing pens, copic marker

Requirements: Final composition should have roughly equal amounts of black and white, figure and ground, form and counterform

Presentation: Black & white, 4cm x 4cm square; reverse figure/ground design of original cropping

Design 1                                    Design 2

Part 2: Pattern Combination

Requirements:

1) Photocopy 8 pieces each of Design 1 and Design 2.

2) Cut out these 16 squares

3) Combine and create at least four 16-square patterns. Record each design using a digital camera, print.

4) Select one pattern, trace and ink this design on art card.

Presentation: Black and white, 19.2 cm x 19.2 cm; mount

2D pattern combination

Part 3: 2D & 3D combination

Requirements:

1) Make a cube out of the pattern above

2) Place cube on top of 2D pattern combination.

3) Take at least 5 photographs from different angles of the cube.

4) Choose one, print.

5) Trace out design and ink on art card.

Presentation: Black & white, 19.2cm x 19.2 cm; mount

Other Info

All above compositions are hand-drawn and inked with markers, except for the very first original icon of the octopus. That was provided by the lecturer.

Took hours to draw and ink the above compositions, because we hard to be precise and neat. One mistake and I’d have to redo the whole damn thing!!! Crazy stuff, but I managed. :) So proud of myself! (^o^)/

Oh ya, and Copic marker is not suitable for inking on glossy art card! Use technical pens! The Faber Castell one is good. :P

Portrait of BoA

3 04 2007

In a Nutshell

Drawn during my holidays last year – a birthday present for my friend since he loves BoA. :D

Ok… not really scanned properly because it was mounted and everything. Was a little too big for the scanner. But the details are still there, more or less. :)

Other Info

Scanner: Canon (don’t know which model, my bf’s)
Drawn with: HB, 2B, 4B pencils
