In a Nutshell

1) To work towards an image resource under one of the above headings.

2) To edit, modify and collate a selection of images in a series of 3 postcards.

3) To analyse the mechanics of communication

4) To encode a chosen identity using visualisation of different aspects of the identity.

5) To achieve a successful decoding of the visual communication created without stating the obvious or underestimating the audience.

6) To work in a traditional format without using any software or computer to assist in your work.

My Choices

Hero: Guan Yu (better known as Guan Gong)
Shero:
Hua Mu Lan
Thingo: Sword

Presentation: 15 cm x 10.5 cm
Medium: Watercolour

We could not use any text, purely images to convey what we wanna show in our hero shero and thingo.

Guan Yu: He is a man of justice, upholds brotherhood and is on of the best warriors ever existed. He won countless battles but eventually his ego got the better of him. Lost a crucial battle and died consequently. He is worshipped as a diety now in temples.

Postcard shows him as a man of confidence and determination, thus that menacing look on his face. The Guan Dao is his signature weapon which was with him through many victories, so it has gotta be in there too.

Hua Mu Lan: Mulan disguised herself as a man to take her elderly father’s place in the army. She dressed as a man and disguised herself as a soldier.

Postcard portrays her as a courageous and filial young lady, all set and ready for battle, and most importantly, she is doing all these for the love of her father.

Sword: Basically a sword is a lethal weapon. I can be seen as a powerful and useful weapon, or just an evil vice.

Postcard shows both sides of a sword. Sharp, powerful, lethal are its good qualities. But if it is not handled for the right purposes, it may become evil and have a life of its own – like that eye staring at you… it wants you to fear it.

Haha ok. Quite drama, but hmm… was quite fun painting those postcards.

Other Info

Please do note that images are not purely created by myself. Picture references are taken from Xbox game Romance of 3 Kingdoms (Guan Yu), Disney Mulan Posters (Hua Mu Lan), and the sword was a picture from the Internet, but I modified it a little to suit my concept.

Sorry for no close-ups, I can’t seem to take them clearly with the right amounts of light. Will try again if I’ve got the time, but the small one above should suffice. Haha!

That’s all folks!

hmm… guan yu and hua mulan are both quite oriental but the sword you have there looks more like something from a westernised hell.

Nope, the Thingo doesn’t necessarily need to be linked to the Hero or Shero. It’s just coincidence that both the Hero & Shero I admire are Chinese warriors. Heh heh.

Yea and I’ve always liked English swords more than the Chinese ones. So I guess I’ve nailed it since you said it looks like “something from a westernised hell”. =D!
